Ford extends production run of GT supercar

High demand sees American firm extend limited run of halo machine, with a further 350 examples to be built

Missed your chance to order one of just 1,000 Ford GTs? Well, you’re in luck, as the manufacturer has revealed plans to extend production of the supercar.

For the next month, wannabe GT owners can apply to be considered for one of the 350 further examples to be built.

To accommodate this increased number of cars, Ford is lengthening the production run by two years. That means its factory in Ontario will produce the high-performance machine until 2022 – extending the original 2016 to 2020 plan.

The Ford GT boasts 647bhp and 746Nm of torque from its mid-mounted 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 engine, propelling it from 0-60mph in three seconds and on to a 216mph top speed.

Hermann Salenbauch, director of Ford Performance, said: “The response to our Ford GT has been unprecedented, with demand outstripping supply by more than six to one.

“By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar, while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers in addition to the 80 Ford GT owners in Europe who’ve taken delivery of their bespoke car to date.”

Ford’s supercar has been inspired by the Le Mans-winning GT40 race cars of the ’60s, which took victory at the famous 24-hour race four consecutive times from 1966 to 1969. It’s the second car inspired by those racers, with a first-generation GT produced from 2004 to 2006.

The firm also recently revealed a GT Heritage Edition – taking the existing model and applying a livery inspired by the 1969 Le Mans-winning car, sporting a Gulf Oil paint scheme.
