BMW updates small car range with new engines for X1 and X2

Latest emissions regulations bring new engines plus special edition M Sport Shadow 1 Series

The onslaught of EU emissions regulation has brought with it some updates for BMWs X1 and X2 compact crossovers.

The closely related pair now gain a new engine option, fully compliant with Euro 6d-Temp protocol. The new powertrain is a four-cylinder diesel mated to front-wheel drive. Badged sDrive 20d, it’s a 2.0-litre unit with 187bhp mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Both X1 and X2 boast identical performance and economy figures when fitted with this new powertrain. The 0-60mph sprint takes 7.7 seconds, while a combined figure of 60.1mpg will reportedly be possible.

The updates also bring the option of an automatic gearbox on the base model BMW X2, the xDrive18d. This will now be available with the same eight-speed automatic, giving it a 0-60mph time of 9.2 seconds with fuel economy at a claimed 57.7mpg.

The models are all Euro 6d-Temp compliant, with BMW boasting that 190 of its models now meet these regulations. It’s achieved this by adding a particulate filter to petrol models, with diesels offering a particulate filter, NOx storage catalyst and AdBlue injection.

The model range updates aren’t just limited to engines. BMW’s also launched a special edition 1 Series, to inject some more life into the car following its facelift earlier this year. The M Sport Shadow edition is available as either a three- or five-door and replaces the existing M Sport trim.

It’s generously equipped as standard, and for a slick exterior look comes with black-accented LED headlights, LED foglights and tinted taillights. A gloss black kidney grille and 18-inch black alloy wheels justify the ‘shadow’ moniker while inside, an Anthracite headliner and textile sports seats make an appearance.
