New website has also been launched to track company’s development

Plans by the automotive arm of chemical and energy giant Ineos to release a Defender-inspired off-roader have been set into motion with the launch of an all-new website.

Ineos chairman Jim Ratcliffe said that the £600 million Project Grenadier would create the “world’s best and most uncompromising SUV”.

The new website allows visitors to see the background to the project, as well as the company’s search for a manufacturing site.

Ratcliffe said: “Projekt Grenadier is starting to capture the public’s imagination and this new website is the next milestone on the road.

“Our decision to build a brand-new world-class 4×4 is an adventure story and we want everyone to share it.”

Ratcliffe first came up with the idea of a Land Rover Defender-replacing off-roader in the The Grenadier pub in London’s Belgravia – giving the project its name. Expected to create 7,000 direct and indirect jobs, the production of the new vehicle will see a range of new models developed, as well as diesel, petrol and hybrid powertrains.

Ratcliffe added: “The building of our new 4×4 is an adventure story in itself.

“We are used to taking on big, innovative projects and delivering them safely on time and on budget. We have vast amounts of manufacturing and engineering expertise, and a proven track record of success, and we look forward to applying this to create a world-class 4×4.”

The all-new car is slated for release in 2020. The Defender ceased production in 2016.
