Blue plaques to be unveiled to mark historic Wolverhampton people and places

Two new blue plaques will be unveiled in Wolverhampton this week to coincide with Black History Month and the 75th anniversary of the National Health Service.

The first plaque, to commemorate Wolverhampton Royal Hospital, will be revealed at a ceremony at the nearby All Saints' Community Centre at 2.30pm on Friday.

The hospital, which closed in 1997, is being turned into homes by Jessup Partnerships on behalf of whg.

The plaque has been sponsored by The Royal Wolverhampton Nurses League.

Roy Stallard, a retired nurse from the hospital and senior trustee for the League, said it had taken several years to secure the plaque. He said the complex nature of the development, the planning requirements of installing the plaque on a listed building, and securing safe access to the site had all caused delays.

"It will be very satisfying to see the plaque on public view,” said Mr Stallard.
