Tesla smashed in as youths drop rocks from A449 railway bridge

The pricey Tesla Model 3, worth at least £43,000, and a Burke Bros recovery truck which was towing it, were among the vehicles damaged by the gang on Stafford Road last night.

Large rocks were dropped through the windscreens of both vehicles as the recovery driver drove under the bridge, located between McDonald's and Halfords on the A449, at about 8.30pm.

The act of vandalism led Sam Burke, managing director of the Wolverhampton-based moving group, to close the road until police arrived for the safety of motorists.

It is not known if any injuries were caused but it has been reported other vehicles were damaged by the group of at least three youths.

Mr Burke told the Express & Star: "Last night my driver was coming back from a job and he had a valuable Tesla on the back with a full glass roof.

"On the bridge there was some lads dropping bricks and the roof of the Tesla shattered. I haven't got a clue how much this will cost.

"Other vehicles were also involved but I don't know many. My driver reported it to the office and I went out in our emergency support truck.

"I closed down the road while waiting for the police to come to prevent any further vehicles being damaged."

Mr Burke then donned a helmet and visor and went up onto the railway bridge in a bid to distract the gang until police arrived.

It is not yet known if the culprits have been caught.

Officers from the British Transport Police attended the scene.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "‘Officers were called to Stafford Road in Wolverhampton at 8.17pm last night following reports of youths throwing bricks from a bridge.

"They conducted a search of the area however no trace of the youths were found. Enquiries are ongoing."
