Members of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, based on Sedgley Street in Blakenhall, Wolverhampton, spent two days on Queen Square meeting members of the public and serving free food.

The event marked the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikhism, and was attended by the parliamentary candidate for Wolverhampton South East Pat McFadden and councillors from Wolverhampton Council.

Over 8,000 samosas, 20kg of pakoras, 2000 spring rolls and several thousand cups of hot tea were served to people from the stall, which was set up on the square in front of a National Express West Midlands bus.

All of the food and drink was distributed by volunteers from the Gurdwara, who answered questions about the Gurdwara and about Sikhism in general.

They also distributed leaflets which detailed the three key principles of Sikhism and a brief history of the life of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

The Gurdwara will continue celebrations of the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji with an evening celebration event on Tuesday at the gurdwara on Sedgley Street.

The event, which starts at 6pm, will see an evening of prayers and religious music and will conclude with a fireworks display.
