Seven-day a week tip plan across Wolverhampton rubbished

Council chiefs in Wolverhampton have rejected calls to follow Walsall’s lead in opening rubbish tips seven days a week.

Conservative member Udey Singh said the city still has an issue with fly-tipping and, at a full council meeting, asked if the Wolverhampton tips in Anchor Lane and Shaw Road would be open Monday to Sunday.

But Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, said new initiatives to tackle fly-tipping were already yielding positive results by reducing incidents by 50 per cent and there was no evidence that extending the hours of both recycling centres would be beneficial.

In Walsall, the ruling Conservative administration has opened its two tips up seven days a week from this week for a 13-week trial in a bid to help combat the problem.

There is scope for Wolverhampton residents to access tips across seven days but Anchor Lane is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays while Shaw Lane shuts on Thursdays and Fridays.

Anchor Lane stays open until 7pm on Thursdays while Shaw Lane continues to operate until 7pm on a Wednesday.

Councillor Evans said: “Most of the fly-tipping took place in the daytime or weekend when our tips were open. So I’ve no doubt that the people who fly-tip, which is a crime and makes them criminals, don’t always abide by the rules.

“We could have opened them 24 hours, seven days, they wouldn’t have used them. I cannot justify anything without evidence base. We don’t waste money for the sake of headline grabbing but we do make a difference.”
