Bilston Road traffic and tram delays after Wolverhampton collisions

Four people were injured after crashes on a busy road in Wolverhampton during rush hour today.

The scene on Bilston Road

The collisions happened just 300 feet apart between Carpetright and the Lexus dealership at 7.50am.

A 4x4 mounted the pavement and ended up wedged in between a series of metal bollards with a bicycle seen lying on the pavement nearby alongside debris.

Further down Bilston Road towards Stow Heath, a Jaguar hit a wall outside the dealership with bricks and a metal fence sent careering into Lexus cars parked in the forecourt.

A vehicle allegedly made off from the scene.

Three vehicles were involved in the collisions.

Traffic was blocked down Bilston Road

An eyewitness, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “It was a bad crash.

“I helped move debris out the road so the trams could continue moving.”

A staff member at the Lexus garage said three cars had been damaged by the impact of the Jaguar, which crashed into the wall.

West Midlands Metro services were disrupted in the aftermath as emergency services attended the scene.

Traffic queued back to Stow Heath as police marshalled motorists, while trams were only able to operate from Priestfield into Grand Central.

Three ambulances and a paramedic officer attended the crash between Carpetright and the Lexus garage.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “The call said a van was up against a wall. Debris is on the road.

“We’ve got four patients in total – all appearing to have fairly minor injuries.”

No one was seriously injured during the crashes.

Tickets were accepted on the National Express 79 bus service.

Our reporter Jamie Brassington was on the scene earlier:

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "We got a 999 call at 7.53am to reports of a collision between a car and a bicycle, where the cyclist was on the floor. He was a 40-year-old man.

"The vehicle was said to be a 4x4 type and the tramway was blocked.

"There is a suggestion one vehicle made off from the scene.

"There is a mention that a Jaguar has gone through a fence at the Lexus garage.

"A suggested vehicle, a BMW, seems to have left the scene.

"It is reported three vehicles were involved.

"There was no serious injuries reported."
