Dramatic rescue sees patient removed through fifth-floor window

A man was evacuated from his fifth-floor flat by paramedics and firefighters in a dramatic rescue in Wolverhampton today.

Pictures taken at the scene showed a firefighter using a winch on the roof of the 11-storey building while paramedics and firefighters used a hydraulic lift to reach the patient.

Onlookers watched as the Hazardous Response Team, West Midlands Care Team and a paramedic officer from West Midlands Ambulance Service were sent to Russell Court in Graiseley.

Three windows were removed from the fifth-floor flat, while some form of stretcher or platform was lowered from the roof of the building on the corner of Hallet Drive and Merridale Street.

Emergency services were first called shortly before 9am but the man was not safely outside until around 4pm.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an incident at a private address on Hallett Drive at 8.54am this morning.

"A man suffering a medical emergency has been transferred to New Cross Hospital."
