Biker seriously injured in Wolverhampton ring-road crash

A biker is seriously injured in hospital after he crashed into a lamppost in Wolverhampton this afternoon.

The crash saw part of the ring road in the city centre closed off for three hours.

The male rider ended up metres away from his bike with no helmet on and suffered serious injuries to both legs after the crash happened near the City Archives at around 1.20pm.

Although an air ambulance was sent to the scene, the injured biker was taken to the major trauma centre at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by land ambulance.

Ring Road St Peter's stayed shut to clockwise drivers between Waterloo Road and Stafford Road until around 4.30pm while police officers examined the crash scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival, the rider was found some distance from his motorcycle with his helmet off.

"The man in his 30s had suffered serious injuries to his legs.

"He was given pain relief, was immobilised and had both legs and pelvis splinted before being taken by land ambulance to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham; the doctor travelled with the patient.”

Four police cars and ambulance staff were sent to the scene, while the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford landed near Molineux with a trauma doctor and critical care paramedic on board.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Police were called to a motorcyclist who had collided with a lamppost on the Wolverhampton ring road at St Peter's at around 1.20pm today.

"The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call West Midlands Police on 101 giving log number 1141 of 3 May."

Meanwhile two air ambulances and three land ambulances were sent to a crash between a car and a van in Walsall.
