Scores of shoppers and residents watched on as firefighters, paramedics and police rushed to the scene just after midday.

The Audi hit railings which lead to the clock tower and overturned, forcing the closure of the road.

The people inside managed to get themselves out and were not seriously injured, according to police.

The male driver of the car was arrested, police said on Twitter, adding that the car was brand new and likely to be a write-off.

Jamie Arrowsmith, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 12.03pm to Market Place to a car which had collided with a gate which leads to the clock tower.

"The car has overturned in the incident.

"An ambulance and a paramedic officer are at the scene treating two patients."

And a spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said two people got out of the car prior to the arrival of firefighters.

"Ten firefighters were sent and paramedics were doing precautionary checks," she said.

A worker from Lettings & More said he heard a "bang" and it was lucky that nobody was killed.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "We heard a bang and went out and had a look and the people were just getting out of the car.

"It's lucky nobody was passing, somebody would have been killed."
