The Willenhall Road corridor, that runs along the A454, is a key gateway into the city and is a direct link that is used by more than 20,000 vehicles every day.

The route helps to connect people to the city and the surrounding areas of the Black Country via the M6.

Now, the Black Country Core Strategy has identified areas of the route for improvements that will see congestion eased on the busy route.

The council say that proposals for regeneration have also been outlined that will create thousands of jobs and homes.

To help finalise the decisions on the work to be completed on the route, the council is encouraging the public to come forward and have their say in a public consultation.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment at Wolverhampton Council said: “As a council, we understand the need for road improvements in the area not only to reduce delays and improve traffic flow, but to make way for further improvements we have planned for our city.

“Improving the road network in the area will support the city’s wider regeneration scheme and hopefully encourage more businesses to invest in our city, benefit residents and attract more visitors to the city centre.

“I strongly encourage anyone who uses the Willenhall Road corridor to have their say in our consultation, to help us make the right choice on improving one of our key gateways into our vibrant city.”

Councillor Milkinder Jaspal said: "This is a very positive project that will add a much needed boost to a key entry into the city.

"Its been 10-15 years since the last work on this route and the regeneration is exciting.

"It's a major boost and desperately needs doing, it hasn't been looked at in a long time.

"Anything that boosts jobs and increases the amount of homes is essential for the city.

"I've seen a similar thing in Heath Town where regeneration has really revamped the area and this work on Willenhall Road will be ideal for the city.

The congested Willenhall Road was highlighted by council bosses earlier this year as a key area for regeneration alongside the Stafford Road and Birmingham Road.
