Walsall salon plan fails to make grade

A bid to convert a garage at a Walsall house into a hair salon has been thrown out by planners.

Applicant Ian Ford had wanted to open All for Hair Ltd in a detached garage of the home in the residential street Farriers Mill in Pelsall.

But Walsall Council’s planning officers said he had failed to demonstrate there were no available commercial units in nearby town centres and that there was no evidence of a need for this in the area.

They also said introducing a business in the road would cause disturbance and noise to neighbours in the residential street.

Mr Ford said the business currently operates out of Lasting Touch, in Aldridge, where a chair and space is rented out.

But he said the business was growing and needed more space, hence the desire to convert the garage at the property.

He said: “Due to the main operating hours of the business coinciding with normal business hours I believe there will be minimal impact on the residence in the immediate and surrounding areas.

“With two-three clients per day impact on traffic along Millers Walk and into Farriers Mill will be negligible and I believe on road parking, as detailed above, will be sustainable as there is plenty of space to park, leaving room for

other vehicles to pass and neighbouring driveways clear.

“During Saturday hours, although I believe still not a problem, additional cars parking may be more noticeable with less neighbours at work and potentially more people around the estate, however there is currently still plenty of available on road parking at these times.

“As ‘All For Hair’ is a successful and growing local business there is a need to relocate into a larger, more suitable space, hence the plan to re-purpose the garage.”
