William Billingham, 54, is also accused of making threats to kill Mylee's mother in Brownhills on January 20.

He appeared briefly at Wolverhampton Crown Court today via video link.

Billingham, of Valley View, Brownhills, was wearing a grey jumper and spoke only to confirm his name.

His brother – former SAS hero and television star Mark Billingham – was in the public gallery.

Billingham will next appear at the crown court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 19.

Tributes have been paid to Mylee since her death, with her former headteacher at St James' Primary, Andy Nicholls, saying: "Everyone at the school is completely devastated.

"Mylee was dearly loved by us all. Her smile lit up the room – in fact it never left her face.

"She was a fun loving, happy eight year old ."
