Erdington Road is closed while South Staffs Water carries out a £400,000 project to replace a water main.

Work got started last week on the project which officials say will improve water quality and supply to people living nearby.

A 4.5-mile stretch of water main along the road and adjoining roads will be replaced in the scheme.

Erdington Road is closed off to motorists heading southbound, with work being carried out seven days a week.

It is the second stage of a wider scheme to improve water supplies will which also carry on next year.

South Staffs Water say the work is happening during the school summer holidays to “minimise disruption to residents, businesses and visitors to the area” with the aim of it being completed before the school term starts in September.

Commuters travelling northbound on the route will be unaffected, while passengers travelling southbound will be diverted onto the A454 bypass and onto Walsall Road, Bosty Lane and Barr Common Road, before rejoining Erdington Road.

The company has also confirmed that nearby residents and businesses will still have access during the project.
