The raid at the old Brown Lion Pub in Walsall happened just after midnight on Monday.

Police were alerted to reports of a break-in at the pub, which has been turned into flats, and when they arrived they discovered around 50 cannabis plants.

The knifemen had fled and it is not known how many plants they took with them.

Uniformed and forensic officers were at the scene on Wednesbury Road throughout Monday morning. So far nobody has been arrested.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Forensics officers recovered fingerprints from the lighting and photographed the cannabis plants and the damage caused by the suspects as they forced their way inside to the building.

"The electricity has been bypassed, so Western Power attended to make it safe.

"An investigation is underway.
