Walsall Council wants to improve stretch of the ring road and part of that is making part Butts Road into a one-way street.

But residents and shop keepers are against it, and a petition was handed into the council last week signed by 300 people.

Councillor Aftab Nawaz, for St Matthews ward, said: "The council has applied for some money to improve parts of the ring road that goes around Walsall and part of that is to make Butts Road a one way street.

"The people who live in the area feel that it's going to create more congestion as people use it as a rat run.

"The shop keepers aren't too happy about it either.

"I organised a petition after speaking to residents and business owners and have lobbied the council saying it should be changed.

"The council will be writing to me in the next month or so to tell me what will happen.

"There's not a desire to stop the whole project, just this part of the project as it will have a massive impact on people's lives.

"The residents have lived with levels of congestion for years and this is going to add to it."
