Severe tumble dryer fire rips through Walsall kitchen

A fire which was caused by a fault in a tumble dryer has ripped through the kitchen of a home in Walsall.

West Midlands Fire Service is now urging residents to check their appliances after the fire gutted the kitchen of the house in Hawthorn Road, Shelfield, on Tuesday afternoon.

Five firefighters from Aldridge fire station rushed to the scene, arriving in three minutes, to what they described as a "severe fire".

Photos posted on social media showed the devastation caused by the fire, which took place at around 3pm on Tuesday.

A spokesman from West Midlands Fire Service said: "We received a call at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon to a property in Hawthorn Road, in Shelfield, Walsall, and we sent one fire engine from Aldridge fire station with five firefighters on board. They got to the scene in just three minutes.

"It was a severe fire in the kitchen of the ground floor of the semi-detached property – and unfortunately the whole kitchen was affected by the fire.

"The fire is believed to have been caused by a fault with the tumble dryer. Everybody in the property was accounted for.

"Firefighters tackled it using a hose reel and wearing breathing apparatus."
