Cyclist 'seriously injured' after being hit by car

A cyclist was taken to hospital with suspected serious injuries after being hit by a car in Wolverhampton.

It was one of a number of serious crashes across the Black Country in the last 12 hours.

A man, aged in his 60s, was injured in the crash, in Blaydon Road, Pendeford, at around 10.30pm yesterday and was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was the cyclist.

"He was treated for potentially serious injuries by ambulance staff before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

West Midlands Police's traffic team tweeted to confirm an investigation had been launched.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the roadside on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop after an accident.

He remains in police custody today for questioning.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian was taken to hospital after a crash which closed Stourbridge Road, in Lye, near Stourbridge, at around 5am.

The 30-year-old man was taken to hospital. His injured are not thought to be life threatening. He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Drivers were warned to avoid the area in the aftermath.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We have treated one patient for potentially serious injuries."

In a separate crash, Sutton Road, in the Daisy Bank area of Walsall, was closed last night.

West Midlands Police said two cars crashed at the junction with The Crescent at around 9pm.

No-one is believed to be injured.
