Banderjit Cheema – otherwise known as Barry – will be taking part in the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon in April after smashing his fundraising target in 2017 for the Stroke Association.

Last year, the Walsall runner raised £17,000 for the charity after setting out a target of just £2,000 – running 10 10ks, 10 half marathons and 10 full marathons as well as a 24-hour long endurance race.

This year Barry, of Christ Church Grove, Walsall, is aiming to do 12 full marathons, seven half marathons and two ultra-running events.

Barry adopted his nickname ‘Usingh Bolt’ in honour of the great Jamaican sprinter.

He has inspired a group of 15 fellow Aldridge Running Club members to join him at the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon on Sunday, all in search of another personal best due to Manchester’s famously flat and fast course.

He said: “I set myself a huge challenge last year, and I will do the same again this year.

"The Greater Manchester Marathon is one of my favourite races because of the support all around the course, there’s nothing like it.

"It really is the friendliest and flattest route, for those wanting to choose their first marathon – this is the best to start with!”

Last year, Aldridge Running Club hailed his achievements by awarding him the John Floyd Cup which is given to male members of the club annually.
