Former pub in Walsall to become travellers plot instead of homes

Council bosses have refused proposals to bulldoze a former pub so plots for travellers and showpeople can be installed on the land.

Applicant Sukhjit Khera submitted plans to demolish the old Wheel Inn building on Lindon Road in Brownhills to build 21 flats.

But development officers on Walsall Council recommended the proposal be rejected because the plot had been earmarked for two travelling plots.

The authority's planning committee has now formally decided to refuse the application.

A spokeswoman said: "The application was refused as set out in the officer’s report and the supplementary paper.

"Whilst there was some support for the proposed redevelopment of the former pub for housing, including the provision of affordable housing and open space contributions, the committee considered greater weight should be given to the unchallenged site allocation document policy which allocated the site for a show persons site."
