Traffic began moving again at around 9.10am, although delays continued for around half an hour while congestion cleared.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a patient who had fallen from a bridge over the M6, between junctions 14 and 13, at 8.28am this morning.

"One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Staffordshire attended the scene.

“On arrival, crews discovered one patient, a woman, who was treated at the scene for minor injuries before being transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital by land ambulance.”

Crashes

The incident happened after two lanes were closed for almost two hours northbound following a collision further down the M6.

Two out of four lanes were closed for recovery between junctions 10 and 10A near Walsall after the crash happened at around 7.20am.

Both the lanes were reopened just before 9am.

Elsewhere an overturned lorry caused disruption on the M5.

One out of two lanes was closed after the HGV ended up in between the motorway and a slip road near Junction 6 for the A449 near Worcester.

The incident happened at around 6.30am and police, firefighters and Highways officers were on the scene throughout the morning while the lorry was recovered.

Nail spillage

Meanwhile commuters faced further chaos yesterday when nails spilled onto the M6 at Junction 12 for the A5 causing a number of wheel punctures.

Traffic was stopped heading northbound as officers swept the nails off the road.

The slip road onto the motorway was also closed while the motorway was cleared.
