The 79-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, at the junction between Stile Cop Road and Hednesford Road, after the crash at about 10.25am today.

Firefighters, police, two ambulances and two Midlands Air Ambulances were sent to the crash, which involved a Ford Focus and a Land Rover.

The man was in a critical condition when paramedics arrived and died a short time later.

Police have named the man who died as Leslie Kirkham, aged 79, of Dobree Close.

Two other people were treated for minor injuries at the scene but did not require hospital treatment, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The man's family have been notified and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

A police investigation is now underway, and anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash-cam footage is asked to contact 101 quoting incident number 178 of July 4.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Crews arrived to find a car and a 4x4 vehicle which had been in collision.

"Crews worked as a team to immediately commence advanced life support but sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later.

“Two other patients involved in the collision were described as ‘walking wounded’ and had sustained minor injuries. They were assessed by ambulance staff but didn’t require hospital treatment.”
