Crew taken to hospital as light aircraft crashes near Cannock

Two men were taken to hospital after a light aircraft crashed near to the M6.

The aircraft crashed while attempting to take off from a field close to Otherton Airfield in Penkridge at around 3.45pm yesterday.

Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a hazardous area response team, and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were sent to the scene.

Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue also attended the crash..

One of the men had to be freed from the aircraft with help from firefighters and ambulance staff.

The two crew members, both in their 60s, from Dorset, were taken to the trauma unit at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton by land ambulance.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We received a call saying an aircraft had come down in a field of crops.

"On arrival, ambulance staff found a small aeroplane that had crash landed in a field.

"Thankfully it had remained the right way up though had suffered considerable damage.

“One of the occupants was trapped and had to be assisted out by ambulance staff and firefighters.

“The two men, who were both in their 60s were taken by land ambulance to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton with injuries not thought to be life threatening.”
