The sound and lught show is called The Great Exhibition: Space, God, the Universe and Everything.

More than 2,400 people were the first to see the digital art installations, created by artist Peter Walker in collaboration with Luxmuralis.

The medieval cathedral is transformed using the artist's 36 metre lunar landscape artwork One Small Step as the centrepiece and encouraging people to walk, sit and dance on the moonfloor while the interior of the cathedral is flooded with light and sound projections to take the visitor to the moon and back, and to Mars. The art installations depict the planets and tell the story of the constellations, the Big Bang and the Creation story.

Visitors can also view footage of the moon landing from 1969 in a replica 1960s living room with audio from NASA, and there's a 4.5m replica Saturn V Apollo Launch rocket in the crossing of the nave.

Ticket sales have rocketed after the first weekend with an increase of 60 per cent over the first three nights and visitors took to social media to record their comments and completed a visitor survey.

Senior marketing manager at Lichfield Cathedral, Vicky Osborn said: “We are delighted. This spectacular light and sound show has really captured the imagination of all our visitors – young and old – and it’s been great to see them sharing their experiences and their pictures on social media with such enthusiasm.”

The Great Exhibition 2019: Space, God, The Universe and Everything runs from 8pm Thursday to Sunday each week including bank holiday until August 26. Book Tickets in advance online at lichfield-cathedral.org or buy at the cathedral. Tickets are £5 adult, £4 child or £16 family ticket.
