War heroes honoured as streets renamed in Lichfield

Thirteen streets on a new housing development in Lichfield are set to be renamed after the city's fallen war heroes.

Lichfield City Council made the proposal to re-name streets on land off Limburg Avenue to personnel named on the war memorial at the Garden of Remembrance.

Lichfield District Council, which is in charge for street naming, asked for relatives of the men inscribed to get in touch to gain consent to use the names where possible.

The submission period ended on February 12.

Councillor Liz Little, Lichfield District Council’s cabinet member for Corporate and Customer Services, Revenues and Benefits, said:

“We were pleased to accept Lichfield City Council’s suggestion to name these roads in honour of the 39 local men who lost their lives fighting for their country in the First and Second World War. "

The 13 surnames are taken from 39 men who served in the First World War or the Second World War.

The names of the men who served in the First World War are: CE Wright, DW Wright, Henry Wright, Horace Wright, SC Wright, WH Wright, Alf Wakelin, Arthur Wakelin, EG Wakelin, J Wakelin, W Wakelin, GT Powell, JW Powell, AG Burt, FE Burt, CA Caswell, CA Caswell Jnr, CH Fenn, TP Fenn, F Larkin, MG Larkin, E Lees, FC Lees, L Lees, G Marshall, JT Marshall, G Martin, W Martin, JJH Neale, F Statham, R Statham, F Taylor ad JT Taylor

The names of the men who served in the Second World War are: J Wright, HC Larkin, WW Martin, FW Taylor, GE Taylor and DE Taylor.

The proposed street names include Caswell Road, Wakelin Way, Neale Close, Larkin Avenue, Statham Street, Marshall Road, Powell Drive, Taylor Way, Lees Croft, Burt Close, Fenn Croft, Martin Drive and Wright Close.
