Flames light up skyline as fire breaks out on Hednesford Hills

A huge blaze lit up the skyline as flames ripped over Hednesford Hills.

Crews spent four hours tackling the grassland fire off Reservoir Road and Rawnsley Road.

Smoke could be seen billowing over the Cannock Chase district in the early hours of the morning.

The fire, which started at about 3.35am, involved 50 metres by 80 metres of gorse and heather.

Seven hose reel jets were to stop the flames and firefighters eventually left the scene just after 8am.

It is understood to have been started accidentally.

Fire crews from Cannock, Chase Terrace, Rugeley and Penkridge Fire Station attended the incident.

Sarah Davidson, spokesperson for Staffordshire Police, said: "Crews were called to a report of a grassland fire on Hednesford Hills at around 3.35am today, Thursday July 5.

"Appliances from Cannock, Chase Terrace, Rugeley and Penkridge attended, along with the water carrier from Cannock and the Unimog off-road appliance.

"The fire involved approximately 50 metres by 80 metres of gorse and heather. Firefighters used seven hose reel jets to extinguish it, this was done by around 7.10am and crews left just after 8am.

"It is believed the fire started accidentally."
