Officers were reportedly stopping and searching lorries between J15 and J16, near Stoke, as part of a major incident.

Both carriageways were closed which caused tailbacks of more than two hours.

A man was arrested at the scene and police were working alongside Immigration Enforcement.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “Officers stopped a vehicle on the M6 and a number of people exited the back of the vehicle.

"Police and partners are assessing the welfare of the people who exited the vehicle and we will be liaising with our colleagues in Immigration Enforcement.”
