West Bromwich construction worker dies after fall at University of Birmingham

A construction worker who died after falling from a scissor lift at the University of Birmingham was from West Bromwich, police have said.

The 62-year-old was pronounced dead at hospital after falling from the lift at a building site on Edgbaston Park Road on January 7.

A second man involved in the incident, a 48-year-old from Birmingham, suffered serious injuries and is still in hospital.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called to reports of two men falling from a scissor lift at the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston Park Road, Edgbaston last Tuesday at about 2.30pm.

"A 62-year-old man from West Bromwich, was sadly later pronounced dead at hospital.

"A second man, aged 48, from Birmingham suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital.

"Enquiries to establish the circumstances are ongoing."

Jordan Eggington, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: "“We were called at 2.24pm on the 7th January to Terrace Road in Edgbaston.

"We sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care car and the West Midlands Care Team to the scene.

"On arrival, crews found two patients, both men. One of the men was given advanced trauma care on scene before being taken on blue lights, in a critical condition, to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

"The second patient was treated for injuries not believed to be life threatening. He was also taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on blue lights for further treatment.”

A spokesman for the University of Birmingham said: “We were shocked to hear about the incident which took place on a Balfour Beatty construction site on campus.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of those involved.

"Following the incident, we are supporting Balfour Beatty, the police, and relevant authorities with their investigation.”
