The supermarket chain could be coming to West Bromwich.

Discount supermarket market bosses had unveiled plans last year to take over the former Staples store, in Tildasley Street, in a move which would create more than 40 new jobs.

Sandwell Council's planning committee has been recommended by officers to approve the scheme, subject to conditions.

The plans also include external alterations including new store access, loading bay extension, trolley bay canopy and alterations to car park and landscaping.

If the plans are approved, the store would be open between 8am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. The store is anticipated to see four HGV deliveries per day.

The move is expected to create 16 full-time and 30 part-time jobs.

Planning officers have received six objections to the proposals – including five from neighbouring residents and one from consultants acting on behalf of Asda. Objections include increased noise, insufficient parking, increased numbers of lorries using Tildasley Street, increase in anti-social behaviour and concerns for pedestrians.

The plans for the supermarket had previously been hailed as 'great news for the town' by West Bromwich Councillor Bawa Singh Dhallu.

He said: "We need more and more businesses to come to Sandwell as a whole, as well as the town of West Bromwich.

"It's very good news that it will create more than 40 jobs for local people. It's great news all round for the area of West Bromwich."

Sandwell Council's planning committee is expected to approve the scheme, subject to conditions, when they meet on Wednesday(16).
