The closed Star and Garter pub site in West Bromwich high street would be redeveloped to create new apartments under the plans

The plans were set to transform the site of the once notorious Star and Garter pub in the High Street with 39 luxury apartments and the proposals had already been given planning permission.

But developer Intelligent Move revealed it is on hold until a buyer is found, although it says a number of potential parties have shown interest.

Intelligent Move has called the project an ‘amazing development opportunity’, adding: “The vendor wishes to dispose of the freehold interest in the entire property and seeks to invite offers on an unconditional basis.”

A spokesman for the developer said the land was put up for sale after bosses received a number of offers from interested buyers – but declined to give more details at this time.

The Star and Garter was shut down by police back in 2016 after officers warned someone could be ‘seriously hurt or killed’ there.

They said it had become a ‘no-go zone’ due to drugs and weapons on the premises.

It was initially shut for 30 days in 2016 after Sandwell Council suspended its licence at the request of police but it never reopened.

A running knife battle in the town centre and another incident when a group of men were threatened with a gun were both said to have been linked to the pub.

Licensing bosses at the council were told a man was stabbed in the back behind The Public building before heading to the Star and Garter.

The apartment block could feature 17 one-bed apartments and 22 two-bed flats.
