Councillors gave the green light to the proposals which will see the Lidl store in Horseley Heath, Great Bridge, demolished and rebuilt.

Proposals will see the existing store demolished and and a new space double its original size restored in its place.

Great Bridge ward councillor Ann Jarvis said: "I think it has always been fantastic for Great Bridge.

"It offers you an alternative way to shop and a more economical way to shop – I look forward to seeing it rising like a phoenix from the ashes."

The applicant plans to provide 117 car parking space for the new single-story store – which a report showed the council to be satisfied with.

A design statement from the supermarket submitted last year said: “The store format has evolved and Lidl has found that many of its stores, including this one, are now unable to be stocked and serviced as efficiently as they might be.

“Some of the company’s existing stores need to be brought up to date to ensure that customers continue to benefit from the quality and positive shopping experience that Lidl offers.”
