People from gurdwaras in the area joined forces to organise Vaisakhi celebrations on Sunday.

Processions starting from the Gurudwara Baba Sang and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara made their way to Handsworth Park on Sunday for a family fun day.

Food stalls selling international cuisine and a fun fair all pitched up in the park to create a carnival atmosphere.

The event honoured Vaisakhi - marking the birth of Sikhism.

It takes place on either 13 or 14 April every year, but the UK's Sikh community extended celebrations for the entire month of April.

"Every Sunday of the month there's events across the UK and this is the final one," said Parmjit Singh Dhillion, who helped organise the event.

"It's an open event for everyone, not just Sikh's. All the community should come together.

He added: "It's the best day, it's beautiful.

"Last year we had 40,000 people attend."

Parmjit is the former president of the Gurudwara Baba Sang in Smethwick and helped establish the fun day in 2012.

It has now become an annual event in the town.

The parade featured a special float carrying the Sikh holy book, prayers and drummers, followed by food and music.

Many in attendance wore yellow and orange clothing as these are considered to be the traditional colours of Vaisakhi.

They represent the spirit of rebirth and sacrifice of the Punj Pyare but are also a colour of joy and celebration.

Around 40,000 people were also expected to attend the event this year, which is the biggest date in the Sikh calendar.
