It is believed the fire started in the kitchen of the first floor maisonette in Allen Close, in the Hamstead area, on Sunday evening.

But it wasn’t discovered until the Monday lunchtime when a carer went to visit the woman at the property.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 12.45pm on Monday, but the woman was pronounced dead shortly after by paramedics.

A female carer, who is believed to have raised the alarm, was also assessed by paramedics at the scene but was later discharged.

The Allen Close home fronts onto West Road on the Durham estate.

Fire investigators are now preparing a report for the coroner following the woman’s death.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “A small fire in the kitchen of a first floor maisonette was out when our crews arrived.

“Sadly, the elderly female occupant was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

“Our investigations suggest that the fire happened sometime Sunday evening and was discovered on Monday by a visitor.

“We believe the incident was cooking related and our investigators will be preparing a report for HM Coroner.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “Unfortunately, we confirmed an elderly lady deceased at the scene.

“We also assessed a carer who had raised the alarm – she was discharged on scene.

“An ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene.”
