Cyclist suffers 'life threatening injuries' after Queslett Road crash

A cyclist is fighting for their life after a collision with a car.

Police closed Queslett Road, in Great Barr, and asked motorists to avoid the area.

The westbound side of the road was closed close to Great Barr Medical Centre.

The crash involving a Renault Clio took place around 7.40am near to the junction with Netherhall Avenue.

The cyclist, aged 34, remains in a critical condition this afternoon.

His family are being supported by specialist officers.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "The cyclist was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one ambulance, a paramedic officer and two critical care cars from the Midlands Air Ambulance.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We have treated one man - the cyclist - who has suffered serious injuries.

"He was given trauma care before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."

Police arrived to direct motorists away from the area.

Access to Asda and the medical practice was still possible.

The 57-year-old driver remained at the scene is cooperating with the police investigation.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “It is important for everyone involved that we piece together the events that led to the collision and I would appeal directly to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet contacted us, or may have caught the collision on a dash-cam, to get in touch."
