Roads closed as elderly woman suffers head injury in Stourbridge town centre

Stourbridge town centre was brought to a standstill this afternoon after an elderly woman suffered a "serious head injury".

Emergency services crews were initially called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car in Bell Street, near to the Crystal Leisure Centre.

But when paramedics attended the scene, near to the Crystal Leisure Centre, they were told by bystanders that the woman had fallen into the road.

She was later taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said they are investigating the circumstances around the incident – which took place shortly before 2pm on Thursday.

They added: "Police were called to a collision involving a car and pedestrian in Bell Street, Stourbridge, just after 1.50pm today.

"An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with a serious head injury."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 1.45pm to Bell Street to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

"We sent one ambulance to the scene. On arrival, crews were told by bystanders that the woman had fallen, rather than being in a collision.

"We treated one patient, a female pedestrian, for injuries not believed to be life threatening. She has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham."

Stourbridge's High Street and Market Street has been cordoned off by police, while emergency services are at the scene. Drivers are being advised to seek alternative routes.
