Nixon Smith was due to catch a flight back from Madrid to Birmingham more than three weeks ago, but he had failed to return to his family home in the Hagley area of Stourbridge.

But this evening, a spokesman for West Mercia Police confirmed that a body had been found in the search for the 23-year-old.

A statement said: "Sadly, officers were informed a body has been found.

"Mr Smith's next of kin has been informed.

"Thank you to everyone who shared the earlier appeal."

Nixon was believed to have flown from Malaga to Madrid on November 19 – but he had not got his connecting flight back to Birmingham.

He had been mugged two days earlier and lost all his personal possessions.

His parents Diane and Dave Smith had issued a plea for information on his whereabouts – having last spoken to their son on November 17.

Nixon was last known to be at Madrid Airport on November 19 at around 10.30pm – the time of his flight back to the UK.

His emergency passport was not used on the second leg of his flight from Madrid to Birmingham.
