A large quantity of rubbish and building materials stacked up close to a house in Hagley Road, Oldswinford caught light at around 11.30pm on Friday.

The flames had spread to the side entry door to the property by the time fire crews reached the scene after being alerted by people living nearby.

The house was unoccupied at the time and so firefighters from the Brierley Hill station had make a forced entry to check that the inside of the property had not been damaged.

Crew Commander Andrew Papworth said: "It was well alight when we reached the scene. The side entry door was badly damaged and radiated heat had affected the fascia of the garage of an adjoining property.

"Safe and effective fire fighting ensured the flames did not spread any further.

"It was fortunate we arrived when we did. The diligence of the local community in raising the alarm ensured that we got there in the nick of time to prevent the incident affecting the property any more."

Mr Papworth stressed the need for all households to have working fire alarms.
