Firefighters were called to Leasowes Park at Mucklow Hill, Halesowen, at 10.11am - but the animal died after they arrived.

Crews used a floating device to cross the icy water and recover the dog's body.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports that a dog had fallen into a pond.

"Unfortunately the animal had got stuck under ice.

"Firefighters used some poles and hooks to recover the animal which unfortunately died."

Crew commander James Clarke, from Woodgate Valley fire station, said the pond was located in Leasowes Park.

He confirmed the dog's owner was present,

A day earlier, another dog was rescued from icy water in the Black Country.

The canine, called Coco, had crossed a frozen canal but got trapped on the wrong side when the ice melted.

Firefighters were called to the canal in Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton, at 8.35am on Thursday.

"Crews used a canal barge from the Canal & River Trust to rescue the dog from the embankment," a fire service spokesman continued.

"The dog has been reunited with the owner and appears to be in good health."

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: "Our crews successfully rescued 'Coco' today, who'd become stranded after the canal he crossed had thawed. A challenge, but it ended well!

"Never be tempted to cross ice or rescue pets from difficult situations yourself, the owner did the right thing by asking for our assistance!"
