Dan Thomas is battling a rare cancer armed with a positive attitude which has not gone unnoticed even as far as space.

Russian cosmonaut, Oleg Artemyev, was so impressed with the Dudley man's positivity, he sent him a message from the International Space Station.

He called Mr Thomas, who has sarcomatoid carcinoma, a 'tough man' and admired him for encouraging people to live their lives to the fullest.

He said he admired his good spirit, positive attitude and Hawaiian shirt.

He said: "Hello there, my name is Oleg Artemyev, I am a Russian cosmonaut.

"Your good spirit and enthusiasm in the fight against cancer has reached the port of the International Space Station.

"You are a tough man. You should keep going and thank you for sharing your energy and positive attitude.

"You encourage people to live their real life, to enjoy every minute of it, to be strong and happy. One has to fight for the future.

"Say hello to your parents and I like your Hawaiian shirt."

He then showed him the impressive view from the space station of the earth and wished him good luck.

The video came as a shock to the 32-year-old who documents his journey from his YouTube account called PeeWeeToms and was 'dumbfounded' by the message which he called 'insane'.

He is taking part in new drugs trials and was recently invited to join Foo Fighters on tour.

He said in a video: "Much to my surprise the other day I was sent a video from the international space station which is insane because Oleg on the international space station sent me a video which I still cannot work out. I do not know how this happened or what the hell is going on.

"It is amazing. I just want to thank everyone who made that possible. I do not actually know you, I do not know who you are, it is just amazing.

"It has really made my day, well made a few days of mine actually, and thank you everyone so so much from the bottom of my heart.

"[I am] just dumbfounded. Anyway have a lovely day everyone."
