Officers were called to the blaze at a factory building off Hay Hall Road, in Tyseley, at around 5.10am on Monday.

The first crew was at the scene within two minutes of leaving the station.

Around 15 fire engines and 100 firefighters are at the scene alongside three hydraulic platforms and the high volume water pumping unit.

Station Commander at West Midlands Fire Service, Marc Hudson, said: “This is a significant fire, the smoke from which can be seen for several miles.

“People who live or work nearby should keep doors and windows closed as a precaution, and drivers should avoid the area because a number of roads are closed.

“Our priorities are to extinguish the fire as quickly and safely as possible, and to prevent the fire spreading to nearby buildings.

“We are likely to be at the scene for a good part of the day.”

The building is less than half a mile from Tyseley Railway Station and is causing delays and cancellations for services in the area.

West Midlands Railway spokesperson Rebecca Preece said: "Everything apart from one train has now been moved from the depot at Tyseley.

"Knock on effects are expected with the 8.26am train from Stratford to Stourbridge currently stuck on the line at Tyseley.

"It may cause cancellations if it isn't moved soon."

Trains between Leamington Spa and Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Moor Street are also being affected.
