Two women killed in crash between car and van on M42

Two women have died following a crash between a car and a van which closed a parts of a Midlands motorway for eight hours.

The crash happened on the M42 near Sutton Coldfield, in the early hours of Friday.

Emergency services were called to motorway between junctions nine and 10 northbound near Curdworth, at 3.20am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save two passengers in the car, two women, and they were confirmed dead on scene."

The two women killed are believed to be from Welshpool.

Two men, believed to be the driver and third passenger from the car, were assessed by ambulance staff and were found to have sustained minor injuries but they did not require hospital treatment.

The van driver sustained back pain and a hand injury.

He was given treatment on scene before being taken to Heartlands hospital for further treatment.

The van driver, a 37-year-old man from Birmingham, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

He has since been released under investigation.

Highways England confirmed the motorway was fully reopened around 11.15am.
