Walsall firefighters clean up with Acorns charity car wash

Firefighters in Walsall joined forces with Acorns volunteers for a charity car wash to raise funds for the hospice.

The Blue Watch crew from Walsall fire station spent four hours washing cars on Saturday and helped raise more than £300.

Watch commander Richard Andrews said: "The whole day went really well and the volunteers from Acorns were really pleased.

"We raised £315.45 overall – it was a good day. Five volunteers came from Acorns too and nine firefighters taking part.

"We were approached to do something like this – obviously Acorns was under threat so we offered our services."

A similar car wash event was also held at Sutton Coldfield fire station.

Acorn Hospice in Walsall received a funding boost from the NHS last month, which ensured it will remain open until the end of March 2020, but is still facing a battle to ensure its stays open for the foreseeable future.

To save the hospice from closure, £2 million must be raised.
