Hospice encourages people to get fit for charity - one mile at a time

Staff at a Black Country hospice have challenged people to run, jog or walk 26 miles next month.

Some of the 2018 participants met up in Mary Stevens Park in February last year to complete their 26th mile together.

Mary Stevens Hospice's One-Mile Marathon encourages supporters to get a little fitter – and keep their New Year's resolution.

The hospice, based in Stourbridge, offers care for adults living with life-shortening illnesses and dedicated support for their families.

People can keep in touch throughout the month and are encouraged to share their progress as they take on the challenge.

Last year, 120 people signed up for the event and raised £4,500. Now organisers are hoping more supporters will take part.

Dan Malin, spokesman for Mary Stevens Hospice said: “First and foremost, it's just a really good thing to do.

"Hopefully by February, most of the chocolate, crisps, cake and alcohol is now out of the house and we're all back to our routines after the Christmas and New Year break so there is more of an opportunity to really commit to an exercise or activity.

"This is about doing something brilliant and achievable to set yourself up nicely for the rest of the year and we've even had regular updates from a lot of the guys who took part last year who have continued walking or running long after the event finished in 2018.

"The fact that some people are also using it as an opportunity to raise money for our patients means the World to us and we can't wait to see everyone taking part again this year."

Gifts will be available for supporters who get sponsored to take part, with a medal, T-shirt and a hoodie all available for supporters who reach pre-set fundraising milestones of £26, £50 and £100.
