Figures from May show that Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, is spending millions of pounds on wages for temporary staff.

Despite the figure falling from the month prior, it is £400,000 higher than the same month in 2017 and it is expected to rise.

A hospital board paper report says that the trust's overspending is being 'driven' by temporary staffing costs and over the last financial year, a total of £20,830,000 was spent on temporary staff.

Russell Caldicott, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Director of Finance, said: “Temporary workforce costs are driving overspends within the Trust and impacting on the ability to deliver the 2018/19 planned financial deficit, noting that whilst costs reduced in May 2018 they are still above historic levels reported at this stage of the financial year.

“The forecast position is based on current patterns of expenditure and a full review of the use of temporary workforce is being undertaken that may result in reductions to this forecast expenditure for the financial year.”
