Great Wyrley school locked down after 'boy spotted with knife'

A school in Staffordshire was placed into emergency lockdown after reports a teenager was at the gates holding a knife.

Police were called to Great Wyrley Academy at about 3pm on Thursday and a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article.

He has since been released under investigation as the bladed article was 'of little to no threat', police have said.

Great Wyrley Academy placed this statement on their website following the incident: "Great Wyrley Academy initiated its lockdown procedure following a phone call from a member of the public who reported a person acting suspiciously outside the main school gate.

"Police were present within minutes to deal with the incident; at all times students and staff were safe.

"I would like to praise the conduct and calmness of all our students and staff during the 15 minute delay to the end of the school day."

Staffordshire Police have said that parents, carers, students, and members of the community should not be worried about the incident.

A spokesman said: "We would like to reassure you that the incident outside Great Wyrley Academy should not cause you ongoing concern.

"A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article but he has since been released

"Local officers dealt with the initial unrest swiftly and we will continue to investigate the matter in partnership with the school.

"There is no information to suggest that there is any ongoing threat or emerging trend in the area so please try not to be alarmed. However, if you do have concerns, please speak to the school directly or contact us on 101."
