Ashley Attwood, 51, has been jailed for five years

Ashley Attwood, 51 and from Eccleshall near Stafford, attacked the woman in Stoke-on-Trent in August 2018.

The victim woke in the early hours to find Attwood assaulting her, Staffordshire Police said.

As she stirred at around 3.20am she saw Attwood run from the bedroom not wearing any trousers.

He had taken 11 photos of the victim as he abused her and later deleted them. However police discovered versions of the files after seizing and examining his phone.

Attwood had initially denied assault by penetration but pleaded guilty at the start of his trial and was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday.

He was given a five-year prison term and will also be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Detective Constable Jennie Holland, of Staffordshire Police, said: "This was a very distressing incident as the victim was woken from sleep as she was assaulted.

"I’m glad she had the confidence and courage to come forward with evidence so we could bring this case before the courts.

"We will always do whatever it takes to bring offenders to justice, while ensuring victims and their families are offered the support they need."

Anyone who has suffered sexual abuse, or suspects others may be subject to sexual abuse, is urged to contact Staffordshire Police on 101.

Alternatively, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via its website.
