Man dies after hit-and-run crash outside Banks's Stadium in Walsall

The 57-year-old man was hit by a car while crossing Bescot Crescent, near the entrance to Bescot railway station car park, just before 7pm yesterday.

He was found with a serious head injury by paramedics and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officers initially said the man was hit on nearby Wallows Lane but have now confirmed the crash happened on Bescot Crescent, which runs from Wallows Lane/Broadway West to next to the Banks's Stadium under the M6.

Kelly While, manager at the nearby Park Inn hotel, rushed out with colleagues to help paramedics after being told of the incident.

She told the Express & Star: "All the ambulances were there. The chap was on the floor and they were working on him. I couldn't see a lot.

"Someone came in to tell me what had happened. We went out to see if there was anything we could do."

She added: "Yes it was shocking to see. It is not something you want to see and wish to happen to someone who is going about their daily business."

The car involved - believed to be small and silver, white or grey in colour - left in the direction of Broadway West and drove past numerous vehicles after the crash.

Officers believe many people will have witnessed the crash or may have dash-cam footage of the car after it left the scene and have appealed for anyone with information to get in contact.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We’ve already spoken to several witnesses who’ve given us important information.

"But looking at CCTV it’s clear that many more people were walking near the scene at the time or drove past. It’s likely they will have seen the collision or the offending vehicle so I need them to call us.

“We also know the car headed in the direction of Broadway West and overtook other cars after the crash. If any of these drivers have dash-cam footage of the offending vehicle we’d like them to get in touch.

“I’d also ask for people to look out for a car matching the description that has front-end damage and to contact us if they see such a car.

“We’re grateful for all information passed to us so please contact us via the website or by calling 101.”

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car attended the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance staff arrived to find a pedestrian, a man, who was in a critical condition following a collision with a car.

"The team administered advanced life support on scene before the man was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to hospital for further emergency care.

"Sadly, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead a short time later in hospital."

The victim's next of kin has been informed and are being supported by a family liaison officer.
