Thieves broke into a number of large containers and units at the wharf on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal in Gailey, between Wolverhampton and Stafford.

Several items were stolen including the motor for a search and rescue boat which now cannot be used when needed, Staffordshire Police said.

A spokesman for the force said: "Overnight from December 8 to 9 , there have been several large containers and units broken into at the wharf on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, Gailey.

"Amongst several items stolen is the outboard motor for a search and rescue boat that was kept at the location. This now won't be able to be deployed, if needed.

"The offenders parked in a lay by on the A5 near to the yard and managed to get through hedgerows and around the edge of a farmers field into the site and used wheelbarrows to transport some of the items across to the roadside.
