'The bonnet's in the kitchen': Car ploughs through hedge and house in Black Country crash
A car ploughed through a hedge, over a garden and into a house in a dramatic crash in the Black Country.
The driver ran away from the scene after the BMW X5 ended up with its bonnet in the kitchen of a terraced home in Whitehall Road, West Bromwich, at around 11pm last night.
No injuries were reported but the road was closed and residents had to be evacuated as specialist firefighters worked to remove the SUV and make the building safe.
Officers flocked to the scene and a police helicopter was seen circling in the aftermath of the crash but the driver is yet to be found.
One tenant said: "I can’t understand how they did it, they went through a large hedge at the corner of our road [Whitehall Road] and Dunkirk Avenue, across gardens fronting flats and into the side of the house, it’s unbelievable.”
The black BMW was pulled out of the property by West Midlands Fire Service's Technical Rescue team, who were sent from their Wednesbury base alongside crews from West Bromwich and Tipton.
Strengthening poles and blocks of wood were used to take the weight off the property.
One person from inside the building was assessed by paramedics but didn't require hospital treatment, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.
A man, who is related to the landlord, added: “I heard a loud bang but thought it was fireworks. Then I got a phone call and came over.
“The driver ran off up the road. Police said it’s a stolen car. The car’s bonnet is inside the kitchen, the firefighters have been putting in supports inside.”
A West Midlands Police spokesman added: "Police were called to Whitehall Road in West Bromwich just before 11.15pm last night, where a car had gone into a house.
"Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, though enquiries continue to trace the driver who fled the scene."
